Day 7 - Fajardo zone

Fajardo is known as "La Metrópolis del Sol Naciente" (the city that guards the sun of the Caribbean). Fajardo was founded in 1772. It was originally named Santiago de Fajardo.

Fajardo is one of the most originally beautiful spots on the island's shores. Located in the east region of the island, bordering the Atlantic Ocean, north of Ceiba and east of Luquillo. Fajardo is a major boating center, with a wide range of rentals and charters available, with daily and sport-diving excursions as well as scheduled ferries and air service carrying passengers and cargo to Culebra and Vieques.

Fajardo's perfect beaches are bounded by calm, clear water ideal for snorkeling, Seven Seas Beach, offers plentiful water sports facilities, offshore points for sailing, snorkeling and plenty of scuba diving. Las Cabezas de San Juan in Fajardo is one of the most important natural areas in Puerto Rico. Las Cabezas, which means "headlands," refer to 3 promontories that extend into the Atlantic Ocean. Impressive representation of seven different ecological systems including coral reefs, beaches, lagoons, mangroves and dry forest within its 316 acres/128 hectares. The preserve is home to many endangered species.

A 19th century lighthouse (built in 1880), known as "El Faro de las Cabezas de San Juan", beautifully restored by the Conservation Trust, caps on of these. The lighthouse has an information center and observation deck, from which you can have a breathtaking view of El Yunque. Open Fri-Sun. Reservations are required for all visitors. For information call: (787) 722-5882 or (787) 860-2560. Off shore near Fajardo few islets can be found: Icacos, Palominos, Palominitos and Diablo, uninhabited coral islands.

Principal manufactures of the area include cigars, furniture, metal and electronic components.

What to do in Fajardo:

  • Las Cabezas de San Juan State Park - Embraces a portion of the island's lush tropical rain forests. It also has a scientific research center, which serve as a home of many endangered species. Visitors can explore the reserve along a network of trails and board-walks. The Island's second oldest lighthouse, El Faro, is located here. Offers a magnificent view that, on a clear day, reaches distant Caribbean islands. The Nature Reserve is open for general and school group tours on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday morning and open to the public Wednesday through Sunday. Special rates are available for groups of 20 or more. Reservations are required for all visitors. Tours lasting two and one half hours, are scheduled four times daily: 9:30am, 10am, 10:30am and 2pm. An english tour is available at 2pm.
  • Faro de Fajardo -  Owned and managed by the Conservation Trust of Puerto Rico, the three headlands that extend into the Atlantic Ocean from the Island’s eastern corner opened as a reserve in March 1991 and features a nature center and a 19th century working lighthouse, "El Faro". The carefully restored neoclassical lighthouse is the second oldest on the Island and offers a magnificent view that, on a clear day, reaches distant Caribbean islands.
  • The Balneario Seven Seas in Fajardo - is a beautiful beach, famous for its camping facilities and its area for campers. The water is calm and crystal clear, safe to swim and snorkel. It is classified as Blue Flag; a global qualification that ensures water quality, safety and service. The beach has restrooms, showers and facilities for BBQs. There are lifeguards and security guards. The parking costs $3; you can camp for $10 per night, and there is an area for campers which you can rent for $25 to $40 per day. The beach is open from Wednesday to Sunday from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm.
  • Escondida Beach - Away from the crowds, the Escondida Beach in Fajardo is perfect for spending a relaxing day in front of the sea. The water is crystal clear and shallow; its extensive shore seems endless, but its not recommended for swimming. Near the shore there is a small reef. To reach this beach you have to park in the facilities of the Seven Seas beach. Walk across the edge of the beach until the camping area ends. You will find a trail (3 feet wide) at left (there are no signs). Follow that trail (1 minute), turn right and then continue until the end (20 minutes). There you will find the beach. This road is surrounded by mangroves. The beach has no facilities. If you bring food, remember to bring a garbage bag too.
  • Palomino Island - is a private island northeast of Fajardo. It is a beautiful island with crystal clear water and white sand. It is perfect for snorkeling, swimming with caution, enjoy the water with your friends or make any kind of water sport. There is also an area for beach volleyball, trails that lets you enjoy all the island and free beach chairs around the entire beach. The hotel has a restaurant (Iguanas Café) on the island where you can order hamburgers, pizzas, salads and drinks among other things. There is a souvenir shop where you can find: inflatables for children, sunscreen, hats, sunglasses and other beach items. The island has restrooms and potable water. If you're interested, you can celebrate activities on the island such as weddings and corporate activities among others. To get there you have two options:
    a) If you are a guest of the El Conquistador Hotel, you can use their free ferry that travels to the island every 30 minutes. b) Have a private boat.
  • Bioluminiscents Bays - In Puerto Rico you can find three bioluminescent bays.  Two located in the mainland, Laguna Grande in the town of Fajardo (east coast) and La Parguera near the town of Lajas (southwest coast). The third bay, mosquito bay, is located in the south shore of the island of Vieques. If you have never experienced putting your hand in water and it lighting up, then you have to visit the Bioluminescent Bay Puerto Rico. Remember there are few places in the world where you can experience this bioluminescence, and we are fortunate to have three bioluminescent bays. We invite you to discover this wonder.

Extension Program - Vieques & Culebra Zone

Puerto Rico is an archipelago and two of its islands are Vieques and Culebra, having the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean. In 2015 TripAdvisor acknowledge Flamenco Beach in Culebra as one of the “Top 25 Beaches” in the world. Vieques and Culebra, together with various small islets, make up the Spanish Virgin Islands, sometimes known as the Passage Islands.

Reference our Vieques and Culebra Brochure, see all excursions and alternatives to do in both islands and be prepare your own package:

• Vieques & Culebra Basic
• Vieques & Culebra Express
• Vieques & Culebra Only
• Vieques & Culebra Total
• Vieques & Culebra Spanish Virgin Island

There are pockets of Puerto Rico that are more LGBT-welcoming than others, but you can’t do wrong pitching San Juan to a Caribbean-bound LGBT traveler, as it is often considered one of the best spots for LGBT travelers in the Caribbean.

Specifically, the Condado District is currently booming with LGBT visitors. The area has seen a resurgence in general as many new hotels have popped up recently including the re-opening of the famous Condado Vanderbilt earlier this year. This is where you dine out and stay out until you’re ready to sleep.

“Puerto Rico is the best of all worlds, a vast collection of islands, the main one offering verdant rain forests, colonial Old San Juan, top resorts like the new Ritz Carlton Dorado Beach and the St Regis Bahia Beach and more,”

Condado, the tourist district, and Santurce are the more concentrated gay neighborhoods. Of course, there are plenty of upscale resorts to stay in, but there are many inexpensive gay guesthouses that offer simple accommodations in the heart of San Juan. For the active, Puerto Rico offers amazing outdoor experiences.

For those looking for a good time, locals and tourists alike pour from the beach into the clubs in the evenings for a long night of dancing that usually includes salsa music. Check out Condado beach, where the gay sun-worshippers tend to gather. Puerto Rico might seem like an exotic paradise, but don't forget: it is a U.S. territory so the dollar is the currency and the locals are English tolerant.
